Helpful Storage Tips
Have you never used a standard storage unit before? Are you looking for helpful information to help you prepare for your move? Here are some tips we've learned in our 12 years of business that will help you pack and store your personal belongings.
- Moth balls are one of the best preventative measures for pests that you can use. They are cheap and effective. Just drop a few in the corners of your unit, and they should last up to 3 months.
- When storing upholstered furniture or mattresses, it's a good idea to wrap those items in plastic. Seal the seams with fiber-reinforced packing tape. Standard storage units are water-tight, but not always air-tight, so taking this simple measure will help keep your items from becoming mildewed.
- A quick and inexpensive tip to keeping every item in your unit dust-and-moisture free is to invest in a large tarp (like you would put on the back of a truck.) Once you've moved into the unit, toss the tarp over top of your boxes and furniture!
- Chemical dehumidifiers can be handy for your unit, as well. They can be purchased from us, or at most hardware stores. Simply follow the instructions on the package, and be sure to check them monthly, especially during the rainy season.
- If you're planning on storing lawn mowers, cars, motorcycles, or similar items, park them on plastic sheeting (an old shower curtain works great) to prevent staining from any leakage that can occur over time. You can also place a flattened cardboard box over the plastic to absorb those spills, to make clean up a breeze.
- When you're packing up to move, keep in mind how you will want to store the items in the unit. Anything of value should be placed at the back of the unit. Items that may be needed during your transition phase should be near the front.
- When stacking boxes in your unit, don't put heavy boxes on top. Always put heavier boxes on bottom. Gravity will cause them to topple over time!
- NEVER store explosives, flammables (like paint, gasoline, and other fuels), fireworks, firearms, and the like. Also, never store food or bird seed, as they will attract pests. Even dried dog food can attract ants!
- FAQS:
Do you have outdoor storage for RVs, boats, or cars? No, we do not provide outdoor storage at this time.
- Is there access to electricity inside each unit?
No. However, each unit does have a light inside, so each individual unit is well lit.
- Will my unit leak when it rains? Do I have to worry about flooding?
All the units at Lock-Tite are water-tight. The facility is built on a slope to allow excellent drainage. Also, every unit door closes 1 1/2 inches below the floor line, which creates a barrier that will keep any water from being able to seep under the doors.
- Do you have any pest problems? Ants? Roaches? Rats?
We pre-treat each unit with boric acid to prevent any pests from invading your belongings. We also spray the facility 3 to 4 times a year, and check for pests on a regular basis. While we cannot guarantee that renters will not bring pests with them when they move in, we take every precaution possible to keep pests out of the units.
- How secure is your facility?
We take several steps to ensure that your items are safe and well-monitored.
- Our resident manager lives on the facility, and checks the grounds 3-4 times daily.
- Our gate hours, 8am-8pm daily, are set that way to keep people from having access to the facility after dark.
- We have state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, lots of lights, and security cameras scattered throughout the entire facility.
